The Champions’ Tournament

Brazil’s first temporary covered arena was assembled, in December 2006, on the Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro. A friendly match was held in it, on December 3rd, between the Brazilian National Men’s Handball Team and the Portuguese National Team. The game is already part of the team’s preparation for the 2007 Pan-American Games, scheduled for Rio.

From the 6th to the 9th, the current Petrobras Tennis Cup champions will hit the Arena’s court for the Champion’s Tournament duels. Argentines Guillermo Cañas, formerly seeded 8th and winner of the Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Asuncion stages; Diego Hartfield, winner of the inaugural stage, in Bogota; Sergio Roitman, champion in Aracaju; and São Paulo’s Flávio Saretta, runner-up in Asuncion, participated. Additionally, three other guest players joined in, with the spotlight on Brazilian player Gustavo Kuerten.

Aside from the tennis and handball games, the fans that went to the Arena could also visit the Petrobras Tent from the 3rd to the 10th, where there was an exhibition of the sports projects Petrobras sponsors, with replicas of the Williams, Stock Car, Formula Truck and Kart racecars. The venue also had race simulators and an area dedicated to culture, which showcased the Brazilian cultural diversity and some of Petrobras’ activities aimed at encouraging Brazil’s cultural production.
