Exploration & Production

Petrobras, with its international recognition and proprietary technology for ultradeep waters, is producing oil at competitive prices in offshore fields at increasingly greater depths, attracting interest from oil companies from the world over with which it is signing cooperation agreements to explore and produce in its reserves in the huge Brazilian submarine platform. Opening the exploration & production area to international partners has generated, in turn, E&P opportunities in other parts of the world, especially where Petrobras' know how can contribute to business implementation.

The area's current objective is to grow production and the oil and gas reserves, in a sustainable manner, and be acknowledged for its excellence in E&P. It also seeks to expand operation areas that have major exploration & production potential and where operating, technical, and technological qualifications represent a competitive differential. Finally, the area also wants to adopt methods and new technologies in sectors where there is a high degree of explotation in order to optimize the recovery factor.

Gas & Energy

Natural gas is a clean fuel, a product with no environmental restrictions, and which significantly reduces pollution rates. The fuel of the future, as it is already being called, contributes directly to a better quality of life in the large cities. Used as a raw material in the steel, chemical, petrochemical and fertilizer industries, it provides heat, generates electricity and motor power. In the transportation area, it can substitute diesel fuel, gasoline and alcohol, thus directly and indirectly participating in the lives of the entire population.

Natural gas is a promising new frontier, opening possibilities in the Brazilian energy sector. With all of its energy, economic and environmental virtues, natural gas is expected to take on greater importance in the Brazilian energy mix. Furthermore, the Gas & Energy area also plays a role in developing alternative energy sources, and invests in conserving energy and renewable energy, to create additional value for the business.

In the onset of this new millennium, Petrobras started deploying an important restructuring plan aimed at turning it into an Energy Company. Petrobras produces energy for people's well-being and uses all of the technology at its reach to transform the different energy sources in progress and growth. By investing in eolian, solar, and biofuel energy, among others, the company helps to diversify the Brazilian energy matrix.

Downstream

Downstream has been keeping close pace with the changes that have been taking place at Petrobras in the past few years, adjusting to the sector’s new market model in Brazil. The challenge of processing the increasing production of heavy Brazilian oil, allowing the conversion of high value added derivatives, has been being overcome with investments and major technological advancements.

Petrobras has broken successive records at its refineries by developing proprietary technology, allowing the heavier domestic oil to yield higher percentages of noble products, and by increasing the business’ profitability.

Downstream operations are fundamental for Petrobras to consolidate its strategic objectives, among which increasing refining capacity in Brazil and processing as much of the domestic oil that is produced as possible. It also aims at raising refining capacity in Brazil and abroad to balance out with Petrobras’ larger oil production capacity.
