Business area of Exploration & Production - E&P

Upstream (Exploration & Production - E&P) Business Area Petrobras’ Upstream (Exploration & Production, E&P) area is in charge of researching, locating, identifying, developing, producing, and incorporating oil and natural gas reserves in the Brazilian territory.

The E&P is structured in the form of Business Units (BUs). Each BU is in charge of managing a set of exploratory and production concessions, as well as operational and administrative facilities with revenue and cost appropriation.

Furthermore, each BU is accountable for its results. The BUs were organized based on concession geographic location, geological similarity, and stage of development criteria, in addition to on the available infrastructure and size.

Propelled by the fact that a major part of the Brazilian reserves are found in very deep offshore basins, E&P, in partnership with other company areas, has taken Petrobras to global excellence in developing and applying exploration and production technology in deep waters. This effort has been acknowledged internationally, as the company received, for the second
time, in 2001, the global oil industry’s most important award, the Distinguished Achievement Award, granted during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC).

In 2007, considering oil alone, total daily production (Brazil and abroad) reached 1,938,426 barrels, a 12,231 barrel/day (0.6%) increase over a year ago. The volume of natural gas the company produced in Brazil and abroad was 63.553 million cubic meters/day, the same as a month and as a year ago. Natural gas production in Brazilian fields topped-out at 44.023 million cubic meters, also stable compared to June 2007 and July 2006.

In June, the international oil & gas production, in barrels of oil equivalent was 238,281 barrels/day, 2.8% below the same month in 2006, because of the contractual renegotiation for the operations in Venezuela.

Also in 2007, production is expected to increase at a faster pace after new wells at installed platforms and four new platforms go online.

Capable of producing 180,000 barrels each, Platforms P-52 and P-54 will go online in the Roncador Field, in the sea of the State of Rio de Janeiro; meanwhile, the Piranema platform will kick production off in the Sergipe/Alagoas Basin and will be capable of producing 30,000 barrels a day; finally, the Cidade de Vitória platform will also start producing up to 100,000 barrels a day at the Golfinho Field, off the coast of Espírito Santo.

The Upstream (E&P) area operates in eight countries: Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, the United States, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, and Trinidad & Tobago. And, as a result of the purchase of Perez Companc, its activities will be extended to yet another three countries: Ecuador, Peru, e Venezuela.

All Offshore E&P Units, whether self-owned or contracted, as well as their onshore facilities have their own Individual Emergency Plan for Oil Pollution Incidents (OPI), elaborated as per Conama Resolution # 293, dated 12/12/2001. A quick and efficient communication channel for emergencies, the “emergency extension” allows the quick distribution of information on incidents and emergencies. In addition to these plans, Petrobras has six regional emergency plans that cover the entire Brazilian territory, including nine Environmental Defense Centers (EDCs) operating 24x7 with qualified professionals and equipment for fast and efficient action, such as oil collectors and contention and absorption barriers for possible oil pollution incidents. The E&P area, in line with Petrobras’ corporate guidance, is in strict compliance with the social responsibility and environmental preservation precepts in all locations where it has operations.
