Names of oilfields
Enchova, Marlim Sul, Barracuda, Badejo and so on are Portuguese names of fish used daily by Petrobras employees. These and many other examples of marine life lend their names to the oil fields on the Brazilian continental shelf. But how did that begin?
Petrobras has had its greatest success in offshore oil exploration. In 1968 when the first offshore well was drilled off the coast of Sergipe State, the first oil field was named after a fish: Guaricema. The name was suggested by geologist José Carlos Braga, inspired by the book "Os peixes do Brasil," (The fishes of Brazil).
Since then, all fields on the continental shelf were named after a fish. The discoveries continued and Cioba appeared at the end of 1969. Then Dourado, Camorim, Tigre, Arraia and Robalo, the last in 1973. The discoveries were still relatively modest and the names were chosen somewhat randomly.
It was only in 1973 that standards were adopted in the choice of field names. They should be Brazilian fish common to the discovery region. It was also decided to avoid common names of fish. So many oil field were discovered that there were not enough names of fish, which led Petrobras to select names of other marine life for its oil fields. Hence Estrela do Mar, Caravela, Coral, Tartaruga, Cachalote, Jubarte, and Baleia Franca, among others. Check out the album with pictures and information about some of the fish and marine life that give their names to the Petrobras fields.
