In the modern world, corporations aren’t admired only for what they do. They are also esteemed for their philosophy. And Petrobras’ has always been committed to allying its own growth to social and environmental development.
The outcome could have been no better: Petrobras was the most awarded company in the International Pipeline Conference & Exhibition, it was acknowledged by UNESCO’S 2007 Citizenship Personality Award, and Reputation Institute has just rated it the world’s eighth most esteemed corporation. And one piece of good news always leads to another.
Petrobras is tops among the energy companies in this ranking, and number one in Brazil. The jury, formed by 60,000 people, in 29 countries, it reached a conclusion any Brazilian could have told you off the bat: Petrobras places the planet’s sustainable development first.

After surveying 60,000 people to measure the good feeling, trust, respect, and admiration consumers have for corporations, the Reputation Institute ranked Petrobras the world’s 8th most respected company.
The survey was based on the RepTrak™ model and showed Petrobras’ surge to 82.19 points, in 2007, up from 73.99 points, in 2006, the most significant increase registered among the companies that ranked among the top eight in the survey. The company climbed 75 positions and led the pack among all energy companies.
The same international ranking shows that Petrobras is first among the Brazilian companies, ahead of the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (31st), the Pão de Açúcar Group (40th), and Gerdau (46th). Twenty national capital companies were included in the survey, four of which ranked among the top 50. In 2006, no Brazilian corporation figured among the world’s 50 most respected companies. This is the second edition of the survey in Brazil.
Seven European and one Japanese corporation are ahead of Petrobras: Lego (Denmark), IKEA (Sweden), Barilla (Italy), Mercadona (Spain), AP Moller-Maersk (Denmark), Toyota (Japan), and Ferrero (Italy).

International Pipeline Conference & Exhibition
» Petrobras awarded in the International Pipeline Conference
Petrobras was the most awarded company during the IPCE (International Pipeline Conference & Exhibition), held from September 26 to 28 2006, in Calgary, Canada.
Of the total of 5 awards, the company was granted three: the International Pipeline Operator, the International Environmental & Social Responsibility, and the ASME Global Pipeline Award (American Society of Mechanical Engineers). The awards were announced during a dinner that brought 500 industry professionals together.
The ASME award is also granted to the winner of one of the five categories and is regarded the event’s most important award as it acknowledges the innovations and technological progress companies make in the pipeline area. The award was for the Community Garden in Pipeline Range project, implemented in the Duque de Caxias municipality, in Rio de Janeiro. The project is part of Petrobras’ Zero Hunger Program.

ASME’S IPCE is currently one of the most important oil industry events in the pipeline segment. The 2006 edition attracted upwards of 1,400 participants from 23 countries.
One of the exhibition’s highlights was the Brazil Pavilion, in which Petrobras and 10 other Brazilian companies participated. Brazil sent a large delegation of professionals from several companies and universities, who presented 31 technical papers, 23 of which submitted by Petrobras.
Transpetro directors Marcelino Guedes and Marcelo Rennó, and Petrobras’ Research Center (Cenpes) executive manager, Carlos Tadeu Fraga, led a delegation of more than a dozen professionals who represented distinct company areas.
2007 Citizenship Personalities Award
» Petrobras awarded the 2007 Citizen Personalities Award
Petrobras was one of three institutions to be granted the 2007 Citizenship Personalities Award, a joint UNESCO, Brazilian Press Association (BPI), and Folha Dirigida newspaper initiative. The award pays tribute to people and institutions that make effective contributions to strengthening citizenship, work, and social development and justice. The elected honorees will be awarded during a ceremony held today, May 3rd, at 7 PM at the Brazilian Jockey Club, downtown Rio de Janeiro (at (Avenida Presidente Antonio Carlos, 501 - 10º andar). Petrobras’ Financial Director, Almir Barbassa, will receive the Citizenship Institution award for the company.
Every year, an electoral college formed by 2,500 of the most representative people of the several segments of society elects, democratically, via direct and secret votes, the ten personalities and three institutions or companies who will be honored. Ten personalities and three institutions were elected in the third edition:

Petrobras is an integrated energy company performing in exploration and production, refining, transportation and distribution.
Brazil’s biggest company, Petrobras is more than an oil, oil derivative, and gas producer. Aware of the importance of sustainable development, the company encourages the production of sources of renewable energy such as biodiesel, ethanol, in addition to eolian, solar, and biomass energy.
Petrobras prioritizes economic growth allied to social and environmental responsibility. In 2005, its social investments totaled R$518 million.
Reinforcing its commitments to sustainable development, Petrobras joined the Global Compact in 2003, and it is the only Latin American company on the Global Compact Committee.
In 2006, Petrobras was listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which evaluates the economic, environmental, and social performances of more than 2,500 companies in 58 sectors. The company scored 74 out of a possible 77 points. Oil & gas sector companies scored an average of 55 points.
The index’s questionnaire includes questions on sustainability, such as corporate governance, brand and risk management, and even more specific questions on the oil & gas industry, such as climate change, standards for vendors, and social project management.
In late 2006, Petrobras gained its place among the companies whose shares are listed in the Bovespa Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) for the company’s high level of commitment to sustainability.
Petrobras has operations in 26 countries, and its shares are traded in the main stock exchanges: NYSE (New York), Bovespa (São Paulo), Latibex (Spain), and BCBA (Buenos Aires) - Petrobras is the most traded non-American company at the NYSE.
Petrobras achieved the largest profit growth (22.3%) among the major oil & gas sector companies in 2005 and 2006.
In 2006, the company's market value topped at $110 million – 33% more than in 2005. Meanwhile, Petrobras’ brand value rose to R$1.01 billion in 2006, 353% more than in 2002 and 37% above 2005, according to data published by Interbrand.
