Us Slum Folk

The Us Slum Folk theatre group (Nós do Morro) began in 1986 on Vidigal Hill, a poor community in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. A theatre project was started up to involve the local population in order for them to gain self-esteem and appreciate themselves, and improve their quality of life through art, education and citizenship. Around 300 students in the community participate in the 20 workshops offered by the group, which include interpretation, scenery, lighting, history of the theatre, literature, dance and movie scripts.
