Film and Human Rights in South America Exhibit (Mostra Cinema e Direitos Humanos na América do Sul)

Responsible: Sociedade Amigos da Cinemateca

The goal is to drive, among the audience, the enhancement and divulging of the debate on human rights, in addition to draw South American countries closer together and increase knowledge on these countries’ diverse realities.

With curatorship by journalist and film director Giba Assis Brazil, the event selected some 30 audiovisual production titles, covering countries that are members of and associated to the Mercosur. It was a representative exhibit of the best humanistic films shot in South America in the past few years. Emphasis was placed on the documentary genre, but there was also significant presence of fiction films. The films were produced as of 2004, with the possibility of having a little older “special guests,” as long as the representativeness, quality of humanistic reflection, thematic and geographical diversity requisites were complied with.

As a whole, the films that were exhibited were a reaffirmation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This aspect was taken into account not only in film selection, rather in its presentation to the public, highlighted in the exhibits catalogue and vignettes that will precede each exhibition, in addition to in the debates.

In addition to film sessions, the Exhibit organized, in each of the eight participating Brazilian capitals, a debate table that counted on the presence of film producers, intellectuals and activists to discuss issues related to Human Rights, as brought up by the selected films.

The exhibit was held from December 04 to 10 2007, in Rio de Janeiro;

  • December 07 to 12, in São Paulo;
  • December 08 to 14, in Porto Alegre;
  • December 10 to 16, in Belo Horizonte;
  • December 05 to 10, in Recife;
  • December 06 to 12, in Belém;
  • December 07 to 13, in Brasília;
  • and from December 10 to 16, in Fortaleza.
