Olinda Monuments - Sé Cathedral

Responsible: Produção e Arte

The project installed an artistic lighting system at the Sé Cathedral, located in Olinda, Pernambuco. The system highlights the construction's architectural beauty, preserved by UNESCO, allows night-time visitation, and creates a new touristic alternative for both tourists and for the local population. The light treatment, achieved through a careful study of the monument's location, its forms, colors, and state of conservation, allows visitors to have a detailed view of the Sé Cathedral, located at the highest place in the town.

The Sé Cathedral is the second oldest church in Brazil. It was established as a parish through a permit brought by Duarte Coelho, under the invocation of "São Salvador do Mundo" (or, Saint Savior of the World). In 1540, the construction was made out of lath-and-plaster walls. In 1584, brick work was made and a mother church formed by three naves with lateral chapels was erected. Destroyed by a fire in 1631, it started being restored in 1656 and inaugurated as a Cathedral in 1677. D. Hélder Câmara's tomb is located near the Cathedral's main altar.
