Understanding the environment Protecting biodiversity is considered a key-element in planning and deploying Petrobras' projects and operations. That is why, in addition to seeking to achieve the least possible environmental impact with its activities, the Company develops and sponsors projects directed towards preserving biodiversity at the locations where it operates. Examples of this effort are the data surveys it carries out in partnership with universities, research institutions, and consultancy Companies. These studies have generated a great deal of new information about the biodiversity of locations such as the Amazon region and the Guanabara Bay, among many others in the Brazilian sedimentary basins. Petrobras also sponsors projects that encourage threatened species reproduction, such as the Tamar (sea turtles), the Manatee, and the humpback whale ones, over and beyond projects to create artificial reefs in the Brazilian coast, favoring marine life development. Another important initiative is elaborating environmental sensitivity studies covering 108,000 square kilometers of pipeline ranges and 6,000 kilometers of coast surrounding waterway terminals. The outcome of this research has been the development of maps that identify and classify the sensitive areas and guide the company's operations. |
