Preserving water

Petrobras acknowledges the importance of water and invests all necessary resources to preserve and promote rational and sustainable water use in its operations. Furthermore, it is committed to contributing to preserving this precious asset for its most noble purpose: human supply.

An example of this concern was selecting water as the theme of the first two editions of the Petrobras Environmental Program, which has already set some R$90 million aside for more than 60 projects aimed at preserving and improving our water resources' quality, including reforesting reserve and forest areas, protecting fountains, and providing the communities that are involved with awareness and qualification to deal with the issue.

In the operational area, Petrobras has invested substantially in rationalizing water use, minimizing pollutant generation and discharge, and in effluent treatment in order to reduce the impacts its activities have in water resource quality and availability.

It has also been intensifying studies on how to reuse effluents internally and on how to recycle them. The refineries already used primary and secondary effluent treatment systems. Currently, a few of them already use the tertiary phase — biodisks —, which is expected to be extended to all company units progressively.
