Last year, two and a half years after installing Pegaso - Petrobras Program of Excellence in Environmental Administration and Occupational Safety - created in early 2000 after the Guanabara Bay accident, Petrobras recorded one of its lowest oil spill volumes ever. Compared to the 2,619 m3 in 2001, and 5,983 m3 in 2000, the 197 m3 spill becomes a benchmark for the oil industry. The information is to be found in the company's annual balance sheet sent to the shareholders.
Last year, there were only two major oil spills, both at the Ilha Grande Bay Terminal (Tebig), in Angra dos Reis. On May 13, 16 m3 of oil leaked from the ship Brotas and, on September 14, a spill of less than a cubic meter was the result of a fire on the pier of that same terminal. In both cases, the company's contingency plan was immediately put into action, and it took only a few days to clean the area.
