Offshore Precautions

Offshore contingency

The Petrobras infrastructure for combating oil spills offshore includes the Anti-Oil Pollution Centers (CENPOLs), Environmental Protection Centers (CDAs), dedicated vessels and identified vessels.

The Anti-Oil Pollution Centers (CENPOLs) are run by Petrobras to train company personnel in their immediate response to deal with an oil spill.

After the Guanabara Bay accident in Rio de Janeiro, early in 2000, Petrobras saw the need to further expand this response infrastructure and hired the Alpina/Briggs joint venture to operate the Environmental Protection Centers (CDAs). The purpose of the CDAs in Rio Grande do Norte, Bahia, Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro and the South is to efficiently deal with oil spills offshore.

In January 2001, Petrobras commissioned the dedicated vessel Astro Ubarana to patrol the waters of Guanabara Bay. It has the capacity to collect 100 m3/hour of oil. Soon afterwards in February, the identified vessel Far Sea (with a collection capacity for 200 m3 /hour of oil) was commissioned to operate in the Campos Basin.
