Speed and effectiveness in combating emergencies
Petrobras, on a par with the latest international standards, installed in Brazil nine EDCs (Environmental Defense Centers), the purpose of which is to ensure maximum protection for its operating units in an emergency. Located at the company's strategic operating points, the EDCs play a supportive role. In other words, they complement the local contingency plans already existing at the terminals, refineries and other business and service units of the company. |
At the same time, the EDCs represent substantial reinforcement for Petrobras regional contingency plans. The São Paulo EDC, the largest in Brazil, is able to provide support, whenever necessary, to the other EDCs, as it is very near Guarulhos Airport, and further improve the company's response time in case of accidents.
Training, mocks and sensitivity maps
Every EDC is equipped with collector boats, lighters, chemical spreaders, bio-remediating agents and up to 20,000 linear meters of retaining and oil absorption barriers, which may be quickly moved to deal with emergencies anywhere in Brazil. On average, each EDC is run by 20 trained professionals and, if necessary, is able to command up to 1,000 persons in an operation. |
Moreover, by analyzing the behavior of tides, winds, currents and environmental sensitivity (sensitivity maps), the EDCs are being constantly updated to reduce the response time and environmental impacts from accidents as much as possible. The EDCs will undertake mock oil spill exercises periodically to improve the integration of all those involved in the contingency plans.
