Petrobras' units are receiving major investments to improve their processes and reduce their industrial residues. New technologies are being applied with this purpose, taking each unit's operational specificities into account.

The existing residues are being treated using globally established technologies, among which the biostack, a material Petrobras pioneered in Brazil. This system consists in oxygenating small portions of soil superimposed vertically to accelerate biodegradation. Thermal destruction treatment systems, which allow the residue energy to be used, are also employed.

Using these processes, Petrobras has already eliminated nearly all residues that existed at its units when the Program was implanted, and the goal is to soon eliminate them entirely. In other words, the company expects to give the residues an environmentally correct destination as soon as they are generated. Furthermore, a computerized system is in operation to manage the residues generated by the company's industrial processes.

New storage areas have also been built, and an ambitious soil remediation and monitoring plan is in course, particularly involving the refineries.
