A USE FOR EVERYTHING

Shale - Pyrobitumen layer, a sedimentary rock containing kerogen, an organic compound which decomposes in heat and produces oil and gas.

Shale produces an endless number of tailings and by-products that can be utilized in a wide range of industrial segments. It is used in the manufacture of glass, cement and pottery, as well as being excellent raw material for the production of expanded clay used in structural concrete and thermoacoustic insulating material.

Limestone shale (geologically carbonated rock called dolomite marl), one of the shale mining tailings, is used in agriculture to correct soil acidity. Other tailings that can be used from an economic viewpoint are:

  • Shale ash, as feedstock for cement production;
  • Oil cake, as an alternative solid fuel to firewood and coal;
  • Shale fines as fuel and in pottery;
  • Retort water in the production of fertilizer and pesticides.
