Sulfur is a natural product that is solid at room temperature. It is yellow and has a characteristic odor. It can be extracted from sulfur mines drilled at great depths; from metals that have sulfur as an impurity; or it may even by recovered from acid petroleum gases. Petrobras produces about 7% of the sulfur consumed in the Brazilian market, and it markets, via Petrobras Distribuidora, three different forms of the product: with hydrocarbon or hydrogen sulfate traces, and in the pulverized form. The different forms of the product can be used for several purposes: cattle raising sulfur, used as a feed complement for cattle; the sulfur that is ventilated in rubber and tire vulcanization; and the industrial sulfur used in industry segments.
Main Applications:
Sulfur may be used for a great diversity of purposes:
- to produce sulfuric and phosphate acid and ammonium sulfate; several chemical products; pigments and paints; siderurgy and metallurgy; metal electrolysis and SO2 production.
- for use in the following industrial segments: paper and cellulose industry; sugar and wine industries; rubber and pneumatic industry; insecticides and fungicides; detergents; colorants; feed complement for cattle.
Environment and Health:
Although sulfur dust is not toxic, respirators equipped with mechanical filters should be used to prevent discomfort during product handling and to avoid sulfur vapor inhalation when it is burnt.
