The formation of natural gas results from the accumulation of solar energy on prehistoric organic matter deep in the earth and from the settling process of the Earth's crust.

As it is lighter than air, natural gas dissipates quickly into the atmosphere in the event of a leak. It only catches fire when exposed to a temperature of over 620oC.
