Petrobras subscribes, follows and lends its support to the following international charters of principals, commitments and initiatives on economic, social and environmental issues:
GLOBAL COMPACT – In October 2003, Petrobras signed up to the UN Global Compact. It is currently part of the workgroup comprised of six companies and 14 business schools, considered a worldwide benchmark and is the only energy company and Latin American company in the group;
COMMITMENT TO UNICEF IN LATIN AMERICA – Cooperating in the sphere of Latin America and the Caribbean in the areas of technical planning, research, communication and the generation of financial resources, with the objective of lending support to programs and/or interventions that protect the rights of children and adolescents, especially in low-income population groups;
COMMITMENT TO ANDI ( AGÊNCIA DE NOTÍCIAS DOS DIREITOS DA INFÂNCIA – CHILDREN'S RIGHTS ) IN LATIN AMERICA – Qualifying the journalistic coverage on matters relating to protection of children and adolescent rights in the Latin American press in 14 Latin American countries;
STATEMENT OF G-8 CLIMATE CHANGE ROUNDTABLE – In 2005, Petrobras signed a declaration whereby leaders of the most important companies in the world formally undertake to provide their backing to efforts to increase awareness about global climate change and assume the commitment to identify and implement policies and measures for the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions;
KYOTO PROTOCOL – By means of which it monitors the various environmental quality indicators, such as gas emissions, generation of residues and consumption of fresh water;
MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOAL – Approved by the UN and 191 nations in September 2000, the set of eight macro-objectives to be attained by 2015, by means of concrete actions by government and society was joined by Brazil with the unconditional support of Petrobras. In August 2004, during the major mobilization around the Eight Millennium Goals in National Solidarity Week, the Company revealed this campaign to its employees and distributed stickers to its clients in all service stations;
PARTNERING AGAINST CORRUPTION INITIATIVE ( PACI ) – The scope of this initiative to combat corruption launched in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 2003, is to harmonize the treatment of problematic aspects relating to corruption. Petrobras became a signatory to PACI in January 2005;
EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRY TRANSPARENCY INITIATIVE ( EITI ) – The intention of this initiative is to increase the transparency of transactions between governments and companies in the extractive sector, in which member countries report payment of taxes, royalties and government tariffs. Petrobras has been a member of the international council board of EITI since June 2005.
The Company participates in commissions and workgroups relating to the defense and promotion of specific interests of its business area or sector in matters of public interest and social responsibility. It participates actively, contributing with human or financial resources, in processes involving drafting of proposals of stakeholders and social character. The Ombudsman's Office, for its part, uses the Principles of the Global Compact for fulfillment of the 3rd Millennium Goal, namely to "promote gender equality and empower women", acting in the coordination of the Gender Commission.
